Misele is committed to a high standard of fair practices.  We have a different attitude toward how we provide our travel, and it translates to Misele’s actions to our employees, our collaborators, and our environment.

There are many things that are not right about safari tourism today. We do business that respects all people and environments that we work with.

Fair wages for tour guides

Our tour guides are the backbone of what determines a meaningful travel experience.

Misele’s guides are paid fair wages above the standard set by the Tanzania Tourist Board.  Employee salaries are performance based, and we conduct regular evaluations of our guides and employees to target improvement.  Misele’s guides have the opportunity for vertical mobility, and guides are part of our management team and ownership structure. They take direct interest in the performance of our business.

Misele’s guides are encouraged to input ideas and feedback toward customer service and improving the traveler’s experience in the framework of Misele’s Core Values.

We see Misele as a collective more than a company.

Our hiring philosophy looks for a range of criteria, from experience in the field, language proficiency, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm. At Misele we have passionate people who care about what they do.

Misele is committed to the continual training of guides and employees.  We believe in guides and employees who understand the big picture of how a safari company works, which improves communication and understanding internally.  Every one is involved in shaping Misele’s vision and operations, not just the owners.

Our trainings revolve around the concepts of problem solving, teamwork, professionalism, management, and emergency protocol.

Positive Community Interaction

Misele advocates for the interests of communities that are affected by tourism.  Operating in a thriving safari tourism industry can impose many costs on the local environments.  These costs include:

  1. The degradation of habitats
  2. Driving up cost of local goods
  3. Pressure on locals to relocate
  4. Introduce an influx of less culturally sensitive foreigners

Few safari operators acknowledge these facts and do not have clear communication with the communities to address and minimize these problems.
Misele Safaris functions differently.  We know that our business is only possible through the cooperation of local communities, so we do whatever we can to maximize the positive aspects of tourism.

Investment in the local infrastructure
As safari and hotel companies build in villages outside of national parks, they have the capacity to bring safe water, sanitation, electricity, and safe roads.  We adopt a principle of mutual benefit, by connecting local communities to much needed infrastructure.

Job Opportunities
Hiring locally is a great way to uplift the communities along safari routes by offering job opportunities, and setting standards on employee rights and fair practice.  Misele makes a priority to hire and train local guides and employees.

Culture sharing
Interaction between travelers and locals can be beneficial for both sides.  Cultural exchange brings better understanding of each others’ lives, struggles, and joys. The realization that Misele hopes to facilitate is that despite material inequalities, all people are the same in their wants and needs of love, safety, and respect.
